Take a hike
Article published: Thursday, April 28th 2011
This weekend the Manchester Modernist society will be hosting the Modernist Mile as part of Sights From the Other City, a weekend of creative events taking part in Salford.
The M3’s Modernist Mile will move through one postcode highlighting the impact of the 20th Century on our built environment and our society – starting at a city hotel and ending at the Islington Estate via a nuclear proof tunnel and a seaman’s mission.
The tour will take in a host of modernist architectural masterpieces from the two cities. It starts from the 1970’s Renaissance Hotel on Deansgate, past the massive BT buildings on Blackfriers Bridge and winds its way along the river Irwell, by Santiago Calatrava’s Bridge and onto the cool curved ’60s windows of Aldine House (now Riverside).
Event organisers Jack Hale and Maureen Ward say the city’s heritage is not all about the industrial revolution. “You’ll soon see that all is not mills and warehouses – in fact the twin cities of Salford & Manchester owe much to the 20th Century.” For them, the city is not just about its birth in 19th century capitalism: “A huge building programme to serve commerce, science, education and housing needs took place in our cities in the last century”.
The walk takes place on Saturday 30 April and Sunday 1st May starting 2pm outside the Ramada Hotel on the corner of Deansgate and Victoria Bridge Street, ending at the Islington Estate.
The Manchester Modernist Society is an artist led project which aims to raise awareness and appreciation of Modern architecture & the urban environment, and related Modern art and design, in Manchester and the surrounding region.
