From Manchester to Heathrow (but not by Plane)

Manchesters climate camp neighbourhood is gearing up for this years Camp for Climate Action. Organisers are expecting over 100 people from the Northwest to make the trip to London this August to demonstrate against the causes of climate change. It was recently announced that this years camp will be near Heathrow airport. Because, the group say, building more runways is not the answer to climate chaos.

The neighbourhood is expected to double in size with more and more people getting involved. Specialists from all manner of fields have joined the campaign, from permaculturists to academics, along with many who are new to the issues of climate
change.

In 2006, nearly 1,000 people gathered near Selby in the shadow of Drax, a coal fired power station in North Yorkshire which is the biggest CO2 emitter in the UK. Over 10 days, they held over 100 workshops, took direct action, made decisions collectively and produced their own energy.

People from all over the Northwest came together in the Manchester neighbourhood to take action, meet and get to know each other. The neighbourhood was also home to Bicycology a travelling caravan of cyclists. They provided music using their pedal-
powered sound system, put on bicycle workshops and blockaded roads! The neighbourhood also provided a bike library, ran an info-stall, and helped promote the camp around the local towns and villages.

Since the camp the Manchester neighbourhood has blockaded petrol stations, a 4 x 4 garage, and done numerous other actions to highlight the threat of climate change. They meet at 7pm on the 1st and 3rd Wednesday of every month in the Sand Bar, Grosvenor Street, off Oxford Road.
