Community journalism course for new editors and writers

Article published: Saturday, March 14th 2015

The MULE team is still sparse on the ground and we need new editors and writers to help carry on the project. We’re offering an intensive 10-week community journalism course for people who are willing to give their time and energy to MULE and get the project back up and running.

mule-logo-1What is the course about?

This course aims to be a practical introduction to news and feature writing. As such it will cover all aspects of the skill, from interview and writing techniques to researching an article, to an overview of the whole media and how it works.  It aims to produce rounded community journalists capable of conducting their own investigations and producing structured articles. Students will work on producing a range of stories, with the best stories published on the MULE website during the course. The trainer will be Salford STAR editor Stephen Kingston and guest lecturers will join us for special sessions and workshops.

Who are we looking for?

The course is free but people have to commit to becoming part of the MULE editorial collective to be able to take part. This would mean writing for the website, editing other contributors’ articles, attending regular meetings and promoting MULE. Everyone and anyone is welcome to apply, no matter what level of experience.

How to apply?

Anyone interested should send a short statement of why they’d like to take part in the course (200-300 words) and a sample of their writing to editor@themule.info until Friday 20th March. You will also be asked to fill in and return a feedback form with some more details. We will get in touch with all applicants as soon as possible after the deadline, but the latest by the end of the month. The course will start in mid-April and venue and exact dates will be confirmed with successful candidates. The weekly 2-hour sessions would take place on a weekday evening, with the odd weekend workshop.
