Political Cartoonist Exhibition
Article published: Thursday, May 13th 2010
Corruption, war and social injustice are among some of the topics vividly illustrated at Ctrl.Alt.Shift’s comic exhibition at Noiselab this week. The gallery showcases some of the worlds best politically motivated comic book art, including work by Pat Mills (2000AD), Dave McKean (Cages), musicians VV Brown and Devonté Hynes (Lightspeed Champion) and Mule favourite Polyp.
The event highlights the importance of using the medium of cartoons to enlighten, educate and entertain readers through powerful narratives and striking imagery. In what is often considered an outdated and under appreciated media, the gallery seeks to put the power back into illustration, proving that comics can still affect public thinking and attitudes towards the political system.
From satirical tales of greed and the absurdities in the political spectrum to stark, compelling illustrations of war, poverty and fear the gallery showcases an accessible and thought provoking range of comics that expose the injustices of global corruption.
The gallery is free to view upstairs at Noiselab on Market Street from 12 – 8pm Thursday – Saturday and 12 – 5pm Sunday until May 16. For a minimal fee of £2 viewers can purchase the one-off 96 page comic book anthology “Unmasks Corruption”, with work from featured artists as well as other leading comic book and graphic novel artists.
