New LETS scheme launches this Saturday 2 October

A new Local Exchange Trading System (LETS) will launch at the October Harvest Festival and Local Food Market this Saturday in Hulme.
LETS involve swapping goods or services in return for local credit, which can only be spent within that same network. LETS are often seen a form of mutual aid – it allows money and resources to stay within a community – which allows members to work in cooperation with one another and increase their purchasing power. Advocates of the system say that it can increase social contact, support for local businesses and help build community cohesion.
The day will involve local growers bringing their produce to swap. However, you can still purchase produce at the event using cash without necessarily joining the LETS scheme. There will also be a series of workshops on LETS and eco-sustainability including: carbon footprint calculation, colted swap shop, computer recycling, eco-build, ethical textiles, feral trade, permaculture, reiji and yoga and more.
Ben Lear from Emerge Recycling said, “With increasing economic uncertainty, food speculation and environmental degradation it is more important than ever that people begin experimenting with alternative ways of living. This event will give people the opportunity to pick up new skills and learn more about how to be more sustainable in our everyday lives.”
The event is being organised by Manchester Permaculture Network in association with Manchester Creative Collective, Arcspace and Emerge Recycling. For more information see the Manchester Permaculture Network website or contact events@mcc-hub.org.
