Thousands of shopkeepers are rallying in India to protest the arrival of large retail stores, saying companies such as Wal-Mart and Reliance Retail would destroy their livelihoods.
Waving banners and shouting slogans like Down, down Reliance and It fs now or never, Wal-Mart quit India, 20,000 shopkeepers gathered in an open field in the southern part of Mumbai last October to protest the opening of new retail outlets.

At ongoing demonstrations across the country, street hawkers held up the opening of new stores and clashed with police.

Dharmendra Kumar, director of India FDI Watch said: This is a do-or-die battle for us. Either they go or the small traders and farmers perish. FDI Watch are leading the campaign against the big companies that would bring big-box style stores and supermarkets to India.
