Council backs down to Market Street protestors

Following two weekends of harassment from police and council officials, campaigners from a range of different political groups in Manchester on Saturday successfully held a mass street stall protest along Market Street against what they claim is a clampdown on free speech in the city centre.

Heating bills hiked 18 per cent for council tenants

Manchester City Council is to raise heating bills for up to 2,000 of its council tenants by 18 per cent this winter. Increased for the second time this year, the increase comes as energy suppliers hike their charges to the council by £278,000, twice the amount anticipated.

Deportation date set for playwright asylum seeker and husband

Two Cameroonian asylum seekers, the playwright Lydia Besong and her husband Bernard Batey, have been told by the UK Border Agency (UKBA) that they will be deported from the UK on Saturday September 10. Batey is currently in immigration detention, and campaigners are calling for his immediate release and a cancellation of the deportation order.
