The People’s Assembley returns to Manchester

The People’s Assembly Against Austerity is set to take over the Northern Quarter for a second time on Saturday 27 July.
A range of venues across the Northern Quarter, including Oldham Street’s Central Hall, Matt And Phreds and Nexus Art Cafe, will become platforms for speeches, discussions, art installations and workshops- all designed to unify a broad spectrum of anti-austerity campaigns.
The main event will take place at Manchester’s Central Methodist Hall between 1pm and 5pm, with an art project at Nexus Arts Cafe and workshops at Matt and Phreds.
Speakers will include journalist Owen Jones, author of ““Chavs – the demonization of the working class”, who will welcome protesters against the bedroom tax to the Assembly after a march through the city earlier in the day. Alongside speakers such as Ismail Ertuk of Manchester Business School, Annette Wright of the Public and Commercial Services Union and representatives from football anti-racism charity Show Racism The Red Card there’ll be poetry by Birmingham’s young poet laureate Stephen Morrison-Burke and an “interactive art project” by local artist and animator Anna Morris.
The overall aim of this latest People’s Assembly meeting is to actively confront and challenge a socially damaging agenda in which austerity is the driving force. There will be workshops around education reforms, NHS privatisation and a range of other subjects throughout the day.
The People’s Assembly Against Austerity was set up as a nation-wide forum by trade union and left political activists to encourage debate about alternatives to the austerity policy of the Coalition government. Its national launch event in London last month attracted more than 4,000 supporters.
Manchester’s Assembly group, one of the many that have sprung up all over the country, first met in May with a large turnout. Organisers are hoping for the same success on Saturday and welcome any individual, group or organisation with opinions, ideas or practical help to share and contribute to the event.

The only acceptable cuts are cuts to the throats of all the corrupt tory filth .
