Chorlton’s Big Green Festival on this Saturday

Article published: Thursday, March 25th 2010

Chorlton’s annual Big Green Festival takes place this Saturday, 27 March 11am -11pm.

Returning for its 2nd year to celebrate all things eco and ethical, the one day free festival will be transforming St Clement’s, outside and in, with teepees, tents, stages and stalls. Putting environmental issues centre stage with live entertainment, activities and workshops, this promises to be a fun and friendly day to sample sustainability.

Last year’s saw 4,000 people joining in the first-ever festivities with swapshops, a bike parade and a huge ceilidh. “Growing Locally” is this year’s theme with the green spirit not stopping at the festival: it is a car-free event and festival-goers are encouraged to travel on foot, bike or public transport. In the run up to the festival, fringe events will be springing up including a Scarecrow competition and a food forage on Chorlton Ees, led by local herbalist Jesper Launder. After the festival, organisers promise to run regular meeting to discuss future initiatives, from guerilla gardening to building an alternative local economy.
