Demonstration to save Hope Hospital Maternity Unit on Wednesday 1 December

Article published: Monday, November 29th 2010

Residents of Salford are being urged to protest outside a meeting which will decide the fate of the Maternity Unit. Despite a petition signed by 55,000 people in the city the indications are that the health authority will act on recommendations to close the unit – meaning that no more babies will be born in hospitals in the city.

Members of the public have been banned from attending this meeting but former Salford MP Ian Stewart is calling on everyone in the city to protest.

Speaking to local independent publication Salford Star, he said: “Every Salford citizen should be mobilising, voicing their opinion and doing something about this. If the people of Salford don’t act with their feet and their voices this will be lost…We should do something, not just talk about it…Speak up for it! Act for it! Or lose it!”
