Exciting new positions at MULE!

MULE are looking to recruit two new members to our team – read here for more information.

MULE Culture Editor

In this role you will join a team dedicated to bringing independent coverage of news and cultural events to one of the UK’s leading cities.

The opportunities presented by this role are:

  • Building your CV and constructing a portfolio of written work
  • Developing skills in writing, commissioning, researching and editing
  • To attend, participate in and help organise workshops
  • Training in other areas, like design and film editing
  • Learning how to organise events
  • Making contacts and networking in the city
  • Contributing to citizen journalism

The role involves the following responsibilities:

Commissioning and editing previews, reviews, features and interviews

  • A target of 2 articles to be published on the website per week: to be written by yourself and/or other writers
  • Arranging tickets and press passes for writers, liaising with events organisers
  • Attending a weekly editorial collective meeting to discuss content and direction
  • Recruitment of new culture writers

The content of articles will focus on a range of cultural events – largely independent, fringe or those with a critical political/social edge. As we are not a listings magazine we try to vary the content of the culture section, with articles on diverse areas such as theatre, comedy, music, cabaret, independent or political cinema, exhibitions and spoken word. Occasionally we will also be looking for culture-related news articles, such as cuts to the Arts Council and funding in Manchester.

We are looking for somebody with:

  • Experience in culture and journalistic writing (necessary)
  • Experience in commissioning, editing and sub-editing (preferable)
  • Familiarity with the cultural and arts scene in Manchester (this you can learn if you have a lot of enthusiasm!)
  • A firm conviction of promoting social and environmental justice and holding the authorities to account
  • Experience in volunteer organisations and working to deadlines. Reliability is essential!

The other members of the collective will offer you full support with all aspects of the role and help you to develop the culture section.

MULE Bid Writer

MULE are looking for a volunteer bid-writer to lead our fundraising activities.

This is an opportunity to get involved in expanding the capacity of a cutting edge independent media organisation.

As bid writing becomes more important in the 3rd sector this role will help you to build your skills and knowledge base in the sector.

The opportunities this role presents are:

  • Helping a voluntary organisation committed to social justice gain funds to continue its operations and provide free training workshops
  • Building your CV and improve chances of future employment
  • Gaining experience in fundraising and writing bids
  • Gaining knowledge of the 3rd sector (voluntary and charitable) as well as intimate knowledge of funding bodies and other organisations.
  • Being a part of a team dedicated to bringing independent coverage of news and cultural events to one of the UK’s leading cities

We are looking for somebody with:

  • Experience in writing funding bids (essential)
  • A high level of writing
  • Knowledge of the 3rd sector and funding bodies and organisations
  • Before starting the role, we will introduce to the aims and ethos of the project as well as our operations in order that you are intimately acquainted with the culture of the organisatioMost importantly we are looking for a person who is committed to social and environmental justice and shares our belief that these aims can be furthered through the use of social media and empowering communities through media literacy.

Responsibilities of the role:

  • To find funding schemes which are relevant to MULE
  • Aim to write one bid every fortnight
  • Report back to the MULE collective each week to inform us of your progress: this can be by email or phone
  • Compile a database of potentially relevant funding available and grants which have been applied for
  • Occasionally face to face interviews will form part of the bidding process
