LETS offer community trading without money
Article published: Saturday, July 10th 2010
A group has been set up in in Manchester to provide a local community-based network of traders to provide goods and services to each other without the need for money. The scheme will use a system of community credits, whereby customers will earn credits for providing a service, which they can spend on services from others on the scheme.
Manchester Local Exchange Trading Schemes (LETS) hopes to revitalise communities by helping people to connect to new resources and find a community identity. Manchester had a LETS scheme running from the 1990’s which became defunct in 2004, but is being revitalised through grassroots initiatives and hopes to offer equal opportunities for all corners of the Manchester community to work together co-operatively for a better city.
