Lobby of John Leech MP tomorrow February 18

Manchester Coalition Against Cuts will stage a lobby at the surgery of Lib Dem MP for Withington John Leech in order to raise attention to the severity and impact of the cuts on his constituency.

They are calling on South Manchester residents to assemble at Chorlton Library from 3.30pm tomorrow, Friday 18 February to show the MP their opposition to the cuts to public services aross Manchester and let him know how they will be affected.

In an open letter to Leech, Mark Krantz and Christina Purcella of the Coalition pick upon the MP’s suggestion that the City Council sell off Manchester City Football Club’s home ground in Eastlands in order to plug the hole in finances, responding:

“[the sale of Eastlands] would only encourage this government to pursue even further cuts to Manchester’s budget. We need to put a stop to the cuts, and we need tax justice, not clever ways that involve the further sell off of the Council’s assets”.

They also recall to the MP that “[w]hen elected as the MP for Manchester Withington in 2010, in your acceptance speech you said you ‘will fight to protect local services”.

The letter signs off with a straight question which the MP will face from many residents tomorrow, and could place him in a conflict between the wishes of his constituents and the dictates of his own political party:

“Will you campaign to save jobs and services in Manchester?”
