Manchester Days Of Action For Squats And Autonomous Spaces – 11th and 12th April 2008
Article published: Wednesday, January 23rd 2008
We call for demonstrations, direct action, public information, street-parties, squatting… all in defence of free spaces and for an anti-capitalist popular culture. We would like these days to enable and inspire discussion, to demonstrate various possibilities & strategies, to be an occasion to share skills.
The night of the 11th will see the opening of a new squat. A family fun day, workshops and a demo will take place on the 12th with a free party that night.
Next Meet Up: Thursday March 20th. Venue to be confirmed. Email manchesterspaceinvaders@hotmail.co.uk for details
Why?
For centuries, people have used squats and autonomous spaces, either urban or rural, to take control of their own lives. Social centres have run participatory activities outside of the mainstream economy, demonstrating the possibilities for self-organising without hierarchy; creating international networks of exchange and solidarity.
These places can provide bases for meetings and projects, for the creation and distribution of subversive culture, for the non-monetary based exchange of goods, resources and knowledge, for experimenting with new ways of living, for collective debates, for recycling and construction, for agricultural activities, for the production of independent media…
Latest News
All over Europe, independent cultures are being threatened and long-standing autonomous spaces are being evicted. Whereas it is still possible to occupy empty buildings in some countries, it has already become a crime in some others. In the countryside, access to land is becoming harder and communes face increasing problems.
What next?
At the moment, we are a group of people in Manchester, who decided to answer the call from European activists. Planning has begun. keep an eye on your local indymedia page, indymedia.org.uk. For more information see april2008.squat.net/en/
