Manchester residents to lose £62m in benefits

With central funding for local government due to be cut by 28%, welfare recipients face tough times ahead. The City Council has estimated that at current levels of benefit claimants, benefit payments in the city could be reduced by £62 million from 2014. All hopes for avoiding an increase in poverty as a result are pinned on the unlikely event of a private sector jobs boom.
Meanwhile over 5,000 jobs will be lost in Manchester over the next five years due to public spending cuts, according to a report by the Office for Budget Responsibility. And at a Council Executive Meeting on 24 November, it was heard how a city-specific forecasting model suggests that these could be even greater. Leader of the Council, Sir Richard Leese, said: “For Manchester people this is really bad news”.
