Only three days left to respond to transport plan

Article published: Tuesday, December 21st 2010

With only three days left for the public to give their thoughts on the Local Transport Plan (LTP) for Greater Manchester, Friends of the Earth (FoE) are asking people to support measures which facilitate a sustainable transport system across the city-region.

The LTP, which will make decisions affecting the next 15 years of transport in the city, is to be published next year by Greater Manchester Passenger Transport Executive (GMPTE). The key proposals set forward by GMPTE include an extension of the Metrolink to areas such as Oldham and Rochdale; the electrification of key train lines; and a code of conduct to improve the performance of bus operators.

In response to the proposals FoE have stated that the plan must make sustainable transport ‘a key priority’, and have made a list of measures which they believe are essential in order to reduce air pollution in the city and help reduce carbon emissions. These include proposals for an integrated transport card, similar to the Oyster card system in London, and an obligation on employers to introduce Workplace Travel Plans which would incorporate schemes like car shares.

Those interested in supporting these sustainable proposals can send a response to GMPTE direct from the FoE website: http://www.manchesterfoe.org.uk/ltp

  1. Please try to get a joined up transport system. Trains don’t connect. Buses don’t run directly from A to B.They shoot off to every housing estate en route. Why can’t at least one bus go direct with limited stops? Why can’t the disused Railway lines be used for Metro trams or bus routes? Consider re introducing 50p fare for pensioners .
