Protests against cuts to Connexions tomorrow lunchtime
Article published: Tuesday, March 15th 2011
On Wednesday 16 March at 12 noon simultaneous protests will be held against cuts to careers and employment service Connexions in Manchester and Ashton-Under-Lyne.
Connexions provide vital careers advice and guidance and more holistic support for young people age 13-25. They are facing enormous cuts at a time when unemployment among young people is fast approaching the 1 million mark.
Locally compulsory redundancies are being made to the services – in Salford 46.5% of the staff are facing dismissal meetings this week, in Tameside 23% this year and 60% over 2 years, in Manchester around a third. North West Unison have called a series of lunch time protests to highlight this.
The two protests will be taking place at:
Connexions Manchester, Moss Side Powerhouse, 140 Raby Street, Manchester M14 4SL. Meet 12.00 for 12.30.
Connexions Tameside, 2-4 Clarence Arcade, Stamford Street, Ashton-U-Lyne OL6 7PT. Meet 12.00 for 12.15, proceed to Tameside Town Hall, mourning the loss of the service with a funeral style procession.
