Save South Manchester Law Centre – lobby of full Manchester City Council meeting

Supporters of South Manchester Law Centre are to hold a protest outside the full Manchester City Council meeting this coming Wednesday 8 December, Albert Square at 9am as part of the campaign to save the law centre and restore its funding.

South Manchester Law Centre has been providing free advice and representation in court to members of the community for the last 35 years. Its expertise has been in the areas of Housing, Welfare Benefits, Employment, Women’s Rights and Immigration and Asylum Law.

Following Council and the Legal Services Commission decisions, the Law Centre is now only able to provide free advice and representation in Women’s Rights and Immigration and Asylum Law.

Despite victory in the first stage of the Judicial Review against the LSC in early November, nothing is yet resolved: the law centre’s ability to provide these services remains under serious threat until funding is restored by both the Council and LSC.  It is still at risk of closure.

As the fight continues, supporters are the law centre are calling on Manchester residents to demand that funding be restored and the service saved. As part of the campaign they are calling on people to lobby their local councillor by taking the following steps:

Ask your councillor at this lobby or at their next surgery:

1. Why is Manchester the only major city not to have a law centre?

2. Why will there be nowhere in South Manchester for publicly funded immigration & asylum advice?

3. Why is such a long established centre with a national reputation being lost to Manchester residents?

    Halloween creatures invade Manchester early: chance to win two tickets to the Illuminaughty Halloween party!

    A heavy mist suddenly falls on a darkened Manchester hiding from sight unspeakably hideous creatures. Drums can be heard in the distance lulling you into a hypnotic trance, the work of witches and daemons no doubt. Or perhaps Voodoo ring masters, descending onto the city streets armed with psychedelic beats banged out by their armies of musical Goblins possessed with the desire for mischief and fun. It must be that time of year again; it can only be the Illuminaughty Halloween party.

    Science Slam: a synergy of science and poetry transcends expectations

    Poetry and science are two things generally not associated with each other, in fact if you joined the two in a word association test you would be one step closer to a chemical cosh and your very own padded cell. However the audience attending the Science Slam at the packed out Nexus Art Cafe Thursday night will never again doubt the validity of the two pursuits being combined; though I can’t rule out they may end up bouncing of the walls of a padded cell at some time in the future.

    We were outside Nexus Art Café in the Northern Quarter, queuing, when a car raced up, the driver shoved a woman to the pavement and the performance began. This was the introduction to the character Aggie in A Dream Play by the Déjà Vu Ensemble, daughter of the gods, who has come to our world to learn what it means to be human.
