Stretford Mega Tesco opposition campaign given new hope

Article published: Thursday, December 3rd 2009

Local campaigners fighting against plans for a Mega Tesco in Stretford have been buoyed by the rejection of a similar scheme in Kirby, Merseyside. The building of the 160,000 square foot supermarket was stopped from going ahead because it would be harmful to the “vitality and viability” of the surrounding area, as well as leading to an increase in private transport.

Trafford Council are currently supporting an application for a Mega Tesco on Chester Road as part of the Lancashire Cricket Ground re-development. The NoMegaTesco group, made up of local residents opposed to the building of the supermarket, say it would have a harmful effect on Stretford, Chorlton, Hulme, Old Trafford, Sale and Urmston.

In 2006 a plan for an 88,000 square foot Tesco was refused by planning authorities due to the negative effects that it would have on the local area. Local residents were surprised that a store twice the size was proposed, arguing that it would have even worse consequences for the area.

“Such massive superstores are not good for local economies. We support the redevelopment of the cricket ground, but not at the cost of damaging local independent shops and businesses,” said local resident Debbie Ellen.

“We are urging local residents to write to Trafford Council and object to this inappropriately sized Megastore,” she added.

The Kirkby development was stopped from going ahead after John Denham, the Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government, upheld the planning inspectorate’s decision to disallow it.

Visit the NoMegaTesco website and join the Facebook group. A Community Action Evening will be held from 6-9pm at Gorse Hill Church, Chester Road, Thursday 3 December.
