The “Make Spinningfields Profitable/Appealing” experiment continues apace…

Article published: Monday, August 10th 2009

Down off Deansgate, behind the mighty John Rylands Library, lies Spinningfields, according to developers, an über-cool yuppie village. According to me, it’s the concrete and glass, personality-free banker’s graveyard where chain restaurants go to die.

It’s with interest, then, that I report Spinningfields PLC are on a rebranding drive, throwing up a large screen to show films and sporting events to the public, free of charge. Of course, they can’t shake those capitalist chains too easily, so you’re only allowed bar bought alcohol inside. No one, however, can stop you from smuggling or just unpacking a massive homemade picnic just beyond the roped-off area. Organisers militancy appears to depend on the film: Breakfast at Tiffany’s saw snatch happy guards attempt to swipe wine bottles. During Withnail and I they didn’t bother trying.

Upcoming screenings include: Grease; The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas; Monty Python and the Holy Grail; Mamma Mia; The Reader; The Rocky Horror Picture Show… (I’m not sure if the mixture of musicals and holocaust drama is intentional, but that’s what it is apparently).

Thursdays and Saturdays until September 10th. Screenings may be cancelled due to adverse weather. Details at:
