Two of North West 10 Released
Article published: Sunday, July 19th 2009
Two of 10 students imprisoned following botched terror raids carried out in the North West of England in April this year, have been released.
Sultan Sher and Janus Khan were among 15 Pakistani men seized during raids which Gordon Brown at the time claimed had foiled a ‘very big’ terror plot. Their release is a success for the campaign group ‘Justice For the North West 10’, which was established in Manchester following the raids.
Whilst gifting the police front page coverage of the arrests in April, the mainstream media has for the most part kept completely silent over the news that the men have been found innocent. No charges were brought against any of those arrested in April despite weeks of investigation. Nonetheless, the Home Office demanded they remain in custody as category A prisoners, and has been attempting to deport them to Pakistan on the grounds that they are ‘a threat to national security.’ Meanwhile, they’re keeping secret any evidence proving why the students are deemed to be a threat, even refusing this ‘evidence’ to their legal representatives.
J4NW10 argue that the deportation orders were to hide government and police embarrassment at the lack of evidence against the students. In recent weeks, one of the students, Tariq ur Rahman, voluntarily accepted deportation to Pakistan, seven remain in custody. The two released will be tagged and subject to control orders.
Tariq Mehmood, national coordinator of the j4nw10 campaign noted, it is now clear that Gordon Brown has misled the nation. There was never any terror plot. He should publicly apologize and resign!’ He and others involved in the campaign are calling on the government to apologize to all the students and the British public over the incident, to issue compensation an to allow the students to continue their studies in the UK. Those remaining in custody have a bail hearing on July 27.
