Writer's Guidelines

Article published: Monday, March 3rd 2008

Articles for Mule should:

  1. Be well-written. i.e. clear, concise prose, coherently structured.
  2. Be your own work and not directly reproduced from press releases or from other sources without clearly stating so.
  3. Be original and not a re-hash of a well-worn subject.
  4. Offer a unique perspective or slant that is ignored in the dominant media.
  5. Be engaging to a wide audience, and not just cater towards a particular niche audience (activists, fans of a a particular music or sport for example).
  6. Where possible, avoid specialist jargon, and clearly explain it if the use is necessary.
  7. Not exceed the agreed article length.
  8. For the News section, adopt a neutral tone and report incidents rather than comment on them.
  9. For the Comment section, be clearly argued and not resort to name calling or ranting.
  10. For the Culture section, articles should be fair. Avoid overly praising friends’ bands/projects/art/writing. Guideline 5 is particularly relevant for culture articles.
  11. Avoid racist, sexist, homophobic or other discriminatory language.
  12. Avoid endorsing specific political parties

Mule retains the right to edit articles to fit these criteria
