Protest marks Bedroom Tax anniversary

More than 300 people protested in Manchester city centre on 5 April against the government’s controversial spare room subsidy, nicknamed the ‘Bedroom Tax’, introduced last year.

The Anti Bedroom Tax Federation for Greater Manchester organised the protest to mark a year having passed since the policy was introduced. The Bedroom Tax has been hailed a political disaster by many, and has been a personal disaster for those affected.

Higher education unions strike at universities in Manchester and Salford

Higher education unions UCU, Unite and UNISON are to hold a one-day strike at Manchester’s two main universities and Salford University. The action on Thursday 31 October, which is the first ever coordinated strike between the three unions, reflects increasing dissatisfaction with yearly below-inflation pay offers from the employers, amounting to a 13 per cent cut in real wages in the last five years.
