Excellence in Cities Initiative
Article published: Friday, July 9th 2010
Despite apparently being part of ‘The Excellence in Cities Initiative’ the old St Edwards RC Primary School now resembles a bomb site.
I walk or cycle past this almost every day.
St Edwards closed last summer as it merged with Bishop Bilsborrow to become the new £7 million Divine Mercy primary built on the old Maine Road site The Maine Place.
The Manchester Local Education Authority’s sign proudly proclaiming “excellence” in the foreground of the demolished old school looks more like a Freudian slip these days – a microcosm of the Labour government’s and local authority’s attitude to education and regeneration.

I used to take kids from that school to play football once a week at the nearby Man City Platt Lane Complex. The school had won an award from ITV for their teaching quality and the ethos of warmth and inclusion of every child was readily apparent. It is such a shame – both for the community in Moss Side and for the sake of the old, well-cared for building itself – that they closed it down. And the former site still hasnt been put to community use by the looks of things.
