Manchester TUC announcement

Article published: Tuesday, October 19th 2010

A circular announcement from Manchester Trades Council released yesterday:

This coming Wednesday, 20th October, George Osborne will present his Comprehensive Spending Review, detailing the huge cuts that he plans to make to public spending.

We think he’s making a big mistake. The scale and pace of cuts is not necessary, and certainly not fair. The Chancellor says the cuts are inevitable, but we think they’re ideological.

By reducing the deficit through 80% cuts and only 20% taxation, the burden will fall on the most vulnerable, rather than those who helped cause the crisis and could afford a fairer share.

And planning to pay off the deficit in four years is much too fast whilst the economy is so fragile. We’re risking a double dip recession, hitting jobs and incomes right across the UK.

Some MPs will be unaware of just how much damage the cuts could do to many of their constituents. Some might not have considered alternatives, such as cracking down on tax dodging, or a Robin Hood Tax on the banks.

Let’s make sure that every MP watching the Chancellor outline his plans on Wednesday will already know the strength of feeling in their own constituency about them.

Please take a moment to email your MP now, letting them know your thoughts.

  1. Dear Editor

Cap the Chief Executive Wage For Rochdale to save Jobs

I find it interesting that the Chief Executive from Rochdale council state publicly that he is concerned about the recent job cuts to public sector workers in his borough while claiming his £174.000 salary each year

He claims that he is trying to protect the front-line services vulnerable people depend on by delivering services for less money.” maybe if we reduced his salary along with many of the other high paid public service salaries paid by the council each year in excess of £40.000 plus , we would have more money left in the public purse to deliver these much need public services to the borough of Rochdale
Council Officials claim they are looking at a number of ways of minimising the impact of redundancies, including early retirement and voluntary redundancy. its clear they are indirectly sacking council workers at all cost to make the so called cuts requested by the Lib Dem / Tory Coalition Government

Based on current government information, the council estimate they will need to save £50 million in the next financial year (April 2011- March 2012). and will implement the following cuts to make the following savings and they could take effect from November 2010 .
    Proposed savings measures include:
£3.5m – Significant reduction in management posts
£2m – Budget savings in core services
£1.2m – Planning, Housing and Regeneration budget savings
£2.1m – Children, Schools and Families budget savings
    £1m – Contributions from arms-length partners
£1.7m – Land disposal and asset management savings
£1.7m – Savings from increasing charges for certain services
£1.4m – Merging functions across the council
Its clear that all Rochdale public sector services will severely be hit , this would hit hard on the low paid workers and the needy in all our communities in Rochdale

Labour Party Members and their elected councillors along with all the trade unions are opposed to these cuts and will continue to campaign against Rochdale council to help save jobs and much needed public services
