Around 2000 people attended a rally in Piccadilly Gardens in protest against the Conservative government and their programme of austerity yesterday. As the crowd gathered in the afternoon sun to express their opposition to another five years of cuts and privatisation, the atmosphere remained optimistic, with a range of speakers and singers leading the demonstration.
The homeless camp has been in the city centre for over a month, protesting against the dramatic rise of homelessness in Manchester and Salford. After their eviction from St Peter’s Square on Tuesday, the protesters have set up camp in St. Ann’s Square.
A new branch of Disabled People Against Cuts will be launching this week in Manchester. The activist group are holding their first meeting on Thursday 19th March at Manchester Deaf Centre to kickstart a campaign against the government’s welfare reforms and the Work Capability Assessment (WCA).

Protesters gathered outside the Chartered Institute of Housing’s annual conference at GMEX in Manchester city centre last Thursday to call on Eric Pickles, Minister for Communities and Local Government, and the government to end the controversial spare room subsidy, or ‘bedroom tax’. The demonstration, led by the Greater Manchester Anti-Bedroom Tax Alliance, was timed to coincide with a key note speech by Pickles to delegates at the conference. The protest was widely attended by affected tenants and activists from across the North West.
More than 300 people protested in Manchester city centre on 5 April against the government’s controversial spare room subsidy, nicknamed the ‘Bedroom Tax’, introduced last year.
The Anti Bedroom Tax Federation for Greater Manchester organised the protest to mark a year having passed since the policy was introduced. The Bedroom Tax has been hailed a political disaster by many, and has been a personal disaster for those affected.
